Focus on Communications
Lay leaders and clergy in New Jersey congregations have been invited to a consultation on communications on March 20, 2004. The event will address what many consider to be the most common problem that local churches face: how to keep members informed and to tell potential members who you are and what you are doing.
The featured speaker will be Ron Buford of Cleveland, Ohio, who directs the denomination-wide campaign to make the United Church of Christ better known. He will explain the church’s massive advertising effort.
Planners for the special program, which will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ, in Montclair, promise practical suggestions for local churches and plenty of smiles and surprises. The consultation theme is “Tell 'Em Who You Are!”
The best practices of neighboring congregations will be highlighted during conversations that will bring together church leaders and decision-makers, newsletter editors, website managers, and publicity committee members as well as pastors from UCC churches across New Jersey. There will be suggestions for outdoor signs, bulletin boards, and even for how to answer the telephone. E-mailed newsletters, advertising approaches and publicity releases will be explained and evaluated. Each person attending will receive a packet of creative ideas.
The event will open at 9:30 a.m. with a presentation led by the Rev. Ray Kostulias of First Congregational UCC of Park Ridge, New Jersey. Kostulias is widely known for his dramatic skills. Coffee and refreshments will be available at the church after 8:30 a.m.
Please call or email advance registrations to Beth Pugh, registrar, 973.783.5676 or . More information from . First Congregational UCC is located at 40 South Fullerton (just off Bloomfield Avenue) in Montclair.
